Our Culture - Planet Friendly

Here at Rusty we are trying to do our part to leave a smaller environmental footprint on our world and in doing so we are developing our ranges to be more planet friendly. Wherever possible we are incorporating sustainable fibres, whilst also ensuring we stay true to our premium quality.

Below is a list of some of the fibres we are already using :

Linen
Linen is a beautiful, natural, durable fabric, and one of our favourites. The fabric can absorb moisture without holding bacteria, is naturally insect repelling and when left untreated is 100% naturally biodegradable.

Hemp
Hemp is a fascinating fabric that is easy on the environment. When comparing it to cotton, Hemp requires half the amount of land and water to produce the same amount of fabric. Clothes made from hemp are extremely durable, lasting years in your wardrobe. It can also be blended with other fabrics making it very versatile for design. Containing UV resistance, it makes it ideal fabric for those Summer days down the beach.

Organic Cotton
Cotton is one of the most used raw materials around, so where possible in our designs, we are trying to utilise organic cotton. Organic Cotton is grown in a way that uses methods and materials that have a far less great impact on the environment. It also restricts the use of chemicals and pesticides.

Tencel
Tencel is a semi-synthetic fibre made from renewable wood materials. The benefits of this luxurious fabric start at ground level. Tencel is manufactured from Eucalyptus trees, which grow fast and thick on low grade land, taking just half an acre to grow enough trees for one ton of Tencel. Production is also done without any pesticides and insecticides…enough said, we are obsessed. We have dedicated a whole collection to Tencel that continues to evolve with design.

Wool Blend
Wool is an all-natural, renewable fibre that is also incredibly durable. Your products will last longer and require less washing (cold cycle please!). And finally, at the end of its lifespan, it is 100% biodegradable (cold cycle please!).
And finally, at the end of its lifespan, it is 100% biodegradable.

PLANET FRIENDLY – RECYCLED FIBRES

Recycled Polyester
Recycled Polyester, also known as rPET is obtained by melting down existing plastic and re-spinning it into a new polyester fibre. This whole situation helps keep plastic from our landfills and of course our beautiful ocean. It also takes less resources to make the recycled version as opposed to its virgin brother.

Recycled Nylon/Elastane
Recycled Nylon/Elastane is made from recycled pre-consumer materials. It’s not only reduces CO2 emissions by 80% and lowers the amount of water wasted by 90%, it importantly = no waste and that my friends, we love.
